Summary of Talk:
The human ear is an amazing device, capable of identifying a speaker from among hundreds of known voices with a single spoken "hello". Nevertheless, scientists have been able to turn CD-quality sound into tiny MP3 files, to alter the perceived location of a sound, and to create realistic-sounding music from simple tones. In this lecture, Dr. Mellody will discuss how music can be altered, compressed, or generated from scratch in ways that will fool your ears into thinking it's the real thing. We will focus on the singing voice, first showing you how the singer creates music, then how we scientists manipulate it, and finally how you perceive it.
